Carpal Tunnel
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition affecting hundreds of thousands of people across the country. It is a numbness of the thumb, index, and/or middle fingers, the result of undue pressure being applied to the median nerve running between the wrist bones and adjoining ligament. The numbness may be worse at night and you may experience weakening of the thumb muscles. The condition is quite common among people with jobs that require daily, repetitive hand motions. It is usually diagnosed by a Nerve Connection Study, which measures the length of time required for a nerve signal to cross the carpal tunnel. Any delay is indicative of CTS. Initial treatment of CTS is usually Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID’s) combined with wrist splints, although other conservative treatment methods such as physical therapy, traction's and stretches have also proven to provide relief without surgery. If symptoms persist or worsen, cortisone injections may be tried. If nerve damage has occurred, evidenced by weak thumb muscles or extreme numbness, surgery may be the preferred treatment, wherein the ligament is incised in order to give the nerve root more space. This procedure is fairly common and usually has excellent results. Let the expert physicians at The Back Institute take care of your CTS symptoms today.
